第637回例会 2025/2/22(14時～17時)

Here is the report of Our regular meeting #637 on February 22, 2025, facilitated by TMOD or emcee Tsukasa.  It was held at F-place 301 with 9 members and incredibly, 4 guests!  We had a Declaration and Induction ceremony for former member Helen Sekine who has decided to return to the club. Helen, welcome back to Shonan!  We found the 4 guests to be all experienced English learners, so we learned a lot from them.

[Word of the Day]
Word of the Day was “gentle” as selected by Yassi. Apparently, this word seems so easy, but Yassi presented us some other meanings which we usually do not notice. Such as Today is a gentle spring day, so the room atmosphere is also very gentle.

[Prepared Speech Session]
※Speakers are assigned a few weeks prior to the meeting for a 5-to 7-minute speech based on a manual called “Path”, which has various objectives including presentation, facilitation, and panel discussion.

First speaker was TM Jade. The title of her speech was “ Brave New World” .
She made a speech by introducing basic presentation software for creating slides to enhance her speech. Her speech was based on general concern to our lives which should be compatible with AI. 

Second speaker was TM Ishii and the title of his speech was “憧れのハワイ “.
This speech was delivered in Japanese. His speech was for the final practice for the coming Area Speech Contest on March 20th. In his speech he explained the importance of foreign exchange program. He described his happiness visiting Hawaii and we learned people enjoy “Bon Dance”. We are astonished that our traditional Bon Odori was evolved into Bon Dance in Hawaii.

[Table Topics Session]
毎回長さ2分ほどの即興スピーチを全員が行い、スピーチの発想力と瞬発力、構成力を鍛えます。今回のテーブルトピックスマスターIchiさんによるテーブルトピックスの質問事項は、現在話題となっているキーワードを中心とした項目で回答者のコメントを伺うというものでした。　回答者のコメントを纏めると、米国の混乱が収束し、悲惨な戦争が早期に終結することを望むというものになりました。考えさせられる質問を英語で聞いて、英語で答えます。

Q1: 米国政府における DEIプログラムの終了についてどう思うか？
Q2: 米国政府効率化省（DOGE）とイーロン・マスクについてどう思うか？
Q3: 日本においてこれまでに性差別を体験したことがあるか？
Q4: ロシアーウクライナ戦争は何時終結すると思うか？
Q5: 米国がガザを所有すると言っているがどう思うか？
Q6: 温室効果ガス抑制、地球温暖化防止のために実施していることは何か？
Q7: 今後訪れでみたいところはどこか？
Q8: これまでにどの様な怖い思いをしたことがあるか？

[Best Table Topics Speaker Award and TMOD Award winners]

– Best TTS Award went to Bob for his excellent answer to Question 2, and best TMOD Award went to Ichi, because his topics given to members in Table Topic session were so practical and uptodate. We learned new words like DOGE, DEI, which are so useful!
Congratulations, Bob and Ichi!!

Our next regular meeting will be March 8th.  Doors will open from 13:50 at Fujisawa City Hall and online ZOOM. Everybody is welcome.  Please check the venue at Access.

No.636 Regular Meeting was held on February 8, 2025 at Fplace 301 with 9 members including our new member Miwa.  We had a Declaration and Induction ceremony for her.  Newcomer, welcome to Shonan!  We also had 2 guests. Former member Helen made her second visit at recent meetings. She says she plans to reinstate from the next meeting. Great news!  Here is the meeting report by TMOD Ichi.

[Word of the Day]
Word of the Day was “mitigate” (verb) as selected by TMOD Ichi. The word means to make more bearable or less severe. The joyful meeting brought us the warmth we needed to mitigate the day’s cold. We really enjoyed the meeting!

In the Prepared Speech Session, the first speaker was TM Eiki. The title of his speech was “Jinchoge” He made a speech about his favorite flower, Jinchoge. His speech was based on his happy life while doing daily walking exercises with watching his favorite flowers at his neighbor’s park. It is really a good habit. In his speech, the English word for the expression “凛とした” was discussed. Later, TMOD Ichi found that the word would be “dignified” or “noble”.

The second speaker was TM Kaneko and the title of her speech was “Mentor from the Viewpoint of Mentee.” His speech was based on his experience with the types of mentoring. The discussion point was there basically were 2 types of mentors – authoritarian vs generous. He explained the merits and demerits of these two. He described his happiness having a generous type of mentor when he was at his job.

Table Topics Master of the meeting was Tsukasa. He gave table topic questions based on the speeches of the day – a new trial.

[Best Table Topics Speaker Award and TMOD Award winners]

In the Award Presentation, TMOD announced best TT speaker to be TM Ichi. TMOD award went to new face Miwa for her effort to check the pronunciation of spoken words by each member.

本日635回の例会は、大寒に入り、風の冷たい1日でした。
今日のゲストはアメリカに滞在、在住の長いお二人の方で、英語に堪能、会員もおおいに刺激を受けました。それでは、本日の司会（TMOD）のEikiさんから本日の例会の様子です。

[Word of the Day]
Word of the Day（今日の言葉）は、タカさんの出題、「Fortuitous」。
偶然の、幸運なという意味です。Fortuneから派生しています。
※毎回“本日の単語”を設定します。例会参加者は、自分の発言時に”Fortuitous”を使うと、きっと幸運があるはず！

[Prepared Speech Session]
※スピーカーは、数週間前からスピーチの準備をし、本番（当日）に臨みます。スピーチ時間は約５～７分。その後で４分の自由参加·フリートーク形式のQ&Aセッションがあり、実践でプレゼン能力を鍛えます。それぞれいろいろな分野のスピーチを集めたPathというオンラインベースのマニュアルで学びます。

トーストマスターズに入会する決意、メンターによる丁重な指導、アドバイスにより会員として成長したことを熱く語りました。

Speech2：TM Tsukasa Aizawa   Title: Is it resolution?
3月20日　Area Contestが開催されます。それに向けての7分から10分の長尺のLecture speechです。特に、ハロー効果により偏見を持った審査をしてしまう恐れがないようにとのお話でした。

さまざまなお題に沿った2分程度の即興のスピーチに、毎回 全員が取り組みます。
今回のテーブルトピックスマスターはYassiさん　新しい年がはじまり、皆さまのお気持ちはいかがでしょうか。今回のテーブルトピックのテーマは月末から来月半ばにかけての様々なイベントについて。行事の多い年初の気持ちを英語で話しました。

  • Q1. Hiroko-san: Fewer people are sending New Year’s cards these days. What do you think about that?
    Q2. Eiki-san: Where did you go for your first visit to a shrine? Also, please tell us about any memories you have of your first visit to a shrine, including those from the past.
    Q3. Tsukasa-san: Today, the 25th, is the first day of Tenjin. Speaking of Tenjin, it is Sugawara no Michizane, who is said to be the god of learning. So, please talk about your studies. Age doesn’t matter.
    Q4. Ichi-san: Today is also Pancake (Hotcake) Day. Its origin is that in 1902, the Asahikawa Meteorological Observatory in Hokkaido recorded the coldest temperature ever recorded, minus 41 degrees. Morinaga & Co., Ltd. established this day because they wanted people to eat hot pancakes on cold days. Please tell us any stories about your pancakes.
    Q5. Keiko-san: February 3rd is Setsubun. Please tell us about your memories of Setsubun.
    Q6. Takeo-san: February 4th is the beginning of spring(Litsusyun). With spring just around the corner, what are you most looking forward to?
    Q7. Jade-san: February 8th is Needle Memorial Day. Tell us about your experience with needlework or something related to needles.
    Q8. Guest-san1: February 11th is National Foundation Day. The purpose of National Foundation Day is to commemorate the founding of the country and to foster love for the country. Let us know your thoughts on this day.
    Q9. Guest-san2.: February 14th is Valentine’s Day. I remember receiving chocolate from a woman I didn’t know in the company mail shortly after I joined. What are your thoughts about this event?

トーストマスターでは特別な行事として世界規模で実施されるスピーチコンテストがあります。
各クラブで2月ごろ実施されるクラブコンテストに始まり、地区代表を決定するエリアコンテスト（3月）、ディビジョンコンテスト（4月）、日本代表を決定するディストリクトコンテスト（5月）、さらにアジア代表予選、世界代表予選など数段階を経て8月に実施するInternational World Championship of Public Speakingで1名のWorld Champion of Public Speakingを選出する大掛かりな行事です。

今年、湘南は神奈川近郊地区のクラブが競うエリアコンテストを3月20日の春分の日に小田原の会場で主催します。トーストマスターズではこのような機会を通じて他ではとても得られないような人との出会いがあり、人脈が広がります。

本日は、第634回の例会で2025年初の顔合わせです。お正月の清々しい雰囲気の中で会長のTsukasaさんの新年のご挨拶を皮切りに 新年早々 お二人のゲストをお迎えし、新会員 Keikoさんを迎える入会式を執り行い、気分の華やぐ例会となりました。TMOD（本日の司会）は、いつも元気なBobさんです。　それでは、本日の例会の様子です。

[Word of the Day]
Word of the Day（今日の言葉）は、”bling”です。
「キラキラ光る（もの）」という意味で、世界的ヒットになっているCreepy Nutsの楽曲の中でも使われています。

とっても多趣味なヤッシーさんですが、今回は健康麻雀の効用についてスライドを駆使して語ってくれました。”ポン・チー・ローン”でアンチ・エイジングを目指しましょう！

Speech2：TM Tsukasa Aizawa　Title： Is it resolution?
英語教師の経験から、短い時間を上手にマネージメントして英語学習のモチベーションを維持させる方法を披露してくれました。 “Persistence pays off” （継続は力なり）ですね!

さまざまなお題に沿った2分程度の即興のスピーチに、毎回 全員が取り組みます。
今回のテーブルトピックスマスターはIchiさん　お題のテーマは2025年年頭に当たっての夢について ．．．　～就寝時の夢、若しくは今年、あるいは今後の人生にて実現したい夢～など、さまざまな夢について即興で語りました

Bob:　20歳時の夢について：　野球に没頭しており、MLBで活躍したいというものでした。
Tsukasa:　悪夢体験について：　夢で自宅のカギを無くして家に入れないという悪夢を見ました。
Yassy:　５億円のドリームジャンボ宝くじが当たったら：　まず行いたいのは、世界一周旅行をしたい。
Eiki：　今年実現したい夢：　毎日英語の勉強をする。　また毎日ワークアウトを行って体を強化したい。
Kazuo:　敵に襲われて壁に阻まれて逃げられないという夢を何度か見ました。
Jade:　夢の国（ドリームランド、ディズニーランド等）に行った時の体験談：　孫とキッズランドに行ったら、現代の孫がビジネスマインドを持っていることに吃驚した。
Keiko:　過去に実現した夢、または今後実現したい夢について：　英語でもっと話が出来る様になりたい。また、スラックキーギターで最低１曲演奏出来る様になりたい。

TMOD Award: Tsukasaさん　ビジネスセッションでリーダーシップを発揮され、エリアコンテストのコンテストチェアを率先して引き受けられたほか、役割分担をスムーズに決めていただきました。今年の地区スピーチコンテストは、3月20日（木曜日）の春分の日に、小田原のUMECOで開催されます。
エリアＤ２に所属する5クラブの代表が競う日本語と英語でのスピーチコンテスト
ぜひ 楽しく盛り上げ、成功させたいですね
